Built-in beats freestanding almost every time

A freestanding bench costs a fraction of a built-in one, and in a small space it is usually the wrong answer anyway. It sits proud of the wall, it eats floor you cannot spare, and the space underneath it is dead.

Built-in work follows the walls you actually have. It squares up an awkward corner instead of sitting awkwardly in it, and the volume underneath becomes storage. On the patio bench in Gary's portfolio, the seat panels lift and the whole base is dry storage — that space simply does not exist with furniture you buy and put down.

Set-out is the part you can see from across the room

On repetitive work — slats, decking, trim, fence boards — the visible quality comes almost entirely from set-out. Get the spacing right and centre the layout, and the cut pieces land at the edges where nobody reads them. Start from one end instead and the last slat is a sliver, right in the middle of the view.

The same logic applies to scribing. Where a run of slats meets a stone chimney breast, each slat gets individually cut to the stone. The alternative is a trim strip covering the joint, which is faster and announces itself immediately.
