Older stock, wetter air, and almost nothing square

Sebastopol's housing runs older than Santa Rosa's average — 1920s to 1940s bungalows and farmhouses through the apple-country parcels, plus a long tradition of owner-built additions that never met a framing square. That history is exactly why so much of the work here does not fit a standard quote.

Sitting further west also means more marine influence. Fog pushes in off the coast and holds moisture against timber for longer than it does inland, and that shows up as dry rot in the places that stay shaded — the north side of a porch, the bottom rail of a gate, the deck boards under an overhang. It is the single most common thing worth catching early out here.

Fencing on a rural parcel is a different job

Fence runs out here are long, the ground is rarely flat, and the posts are usually going into soil that holds water through the winter. A fence that would last twenty years on a quarter-acre lot in town does not get the same life on an exposed rural boundary.

That makes post detail the whole decision. Where a run matters, steel posts remove the rot point entirely — and on a long run, the thinner post line reads better anyway. Fence installation and fence repair are the two things this terrain generates most.

A town that actually wants the odd project

Sebastopol has more appetite than most places for the one-off — the bench built into a specific corner, the live-edge slab that came from a tree on the property, the thing that does not have a category. That is the part of Gary's work that most handymen do not offer at all.
