Why horizontal fencing is harder than it looks

A horizontal fence is not just a normal fence rotated. Every error accumulates along the run and stays visible, because the eye tracks a horizontal line for its whole length and catches any drift in it.

Vertical fencing hides a great deal. Each board is short, so a board that is slightly off reads as one board slightly off. Run the same material horizontally and a gap that opens up by an eighth of an inch over twenty feet is a wedge of daylight that anyone can see from the far end of the yard. Getting it right is a matter of setting the posts accurately and keeping every reveal identical — which is most of the labour.

Posts decide when the fence dies

Almost every fence failure is a post failure. Boards weather slowly and predictably; posts rot at grade, where the timber meets wet soil, and once a post goes the panel it carries goes with it.

Steel posts remove that failure point entirely. They also take up much less visual width than a 4x4, which suits horizontal fencing — a thin post line lets the horizontal boards do the visual work. Where timber posts are the right call, what matters is what happens at grade and how well the post is set.

Redwood and Sonoma County weather

Local conditions are hard on fencing in two directions. Wet winters drive moisture into the timber and into the ground around the posts; dry summers pull it back out. That cycle is what cups boards and splits them around the fixings.

Redwood handles that movement better than most softwoods, which is why it is the regional default. Board spacing matters here too — boards fitted tight with no reveal have nowhere to go when they swell, so they cup or push their neighbours out of line.
